Ukrainian archbishop and political prisoner Kiril Lakota (played by Anthony Quinn) is freed from a Siberian labor camp. He travels to Rome, and after an audience with the Pope, becomes a Cardinal. Kiril joins the Congress of Cardinals after the death of the Pontiff, and most unexpectedly, Kiril’s unique character and experiences lead to his election. He enters a world of feuding super powers and must struggle to end the suffering of millions. (This 1968 production also stars Laurence Olivier, Oskar Werner, and David Janssen)
