Gerard F. Doherty Memorial Scholarship
Two (2) Private Parochial High School Freshmen will be selected by the Gerard F. Doherty Memorial Scholarship Committee to receive a scholarship of $2,000. If selected for the scholarship the Freshman year, recipients may receive additional scholarships in the amount of $2,000 for the Sophomore, Junior and Senior years of high school provided they meet the recurring requirements.*
For 2025, all applications must be submitted by Friday, September 12, 2025, with recipients being notified via telephone on Friday, September 26, 2025
To be considered for Freshman Scholarship applicants must:

- Be a resident of Charlestown or have a parent or grandparent currently living in or originally from Charlestown.
- Be entering your freshman year of a private or parochial high school.
- Write a single page (double-spaced) essay describing your relationship with Charlestown and how receiving this scholarship will assist you in reaching your educational goals.
If selected, recipients must:

- Provide proof of enrollment at a private or parochial high school.
- Be prepared to provide the GFD Committee with additional information or participate in an interview, if requested.
- Attend the Bunker Hill Associates Breakfast.
How to Apply for Freshnman Scholarship:
On a 3×5 index card please include the following information:

- Full Name
- Address, email address and phone number.
- Your relationship to Charlestown
- Name and addreess of the private or parochial school you are entering.
- Enclose your one-page essay described above.

* Recurring requirements for Freshman recipients:
If a freshman recipient meets the following requirements, they will be eligible to receive an additional scholarship for each of the following years:

- Be enrolled in, and provide letter of good standing, from private or parochial school.
- Have a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.15 or higher for the preceeding year.
If the freshman recipient meets the above two requirements please submit a letter of your intent to receive the additional scholarship along with your letter of good standing and proof of enrollment at a private or parochial school and a transcript showing your GPA of 3.15 or higher. In addition, please submit a one page essay from the student explaining how your first year went and what you look forward to next year.
